Tolerance opens doors in many areas of life such as business, education, travel, lifestyle, art, and more. We would like our kids to feel relaxed and open to different cultures.

Parents who show tolerance through their daily actions and words, teach their children to appreciate the differences in people.

It is not just about telling them what is right and what is wrong. They need to accept people as they are from their personal experiences.

Here are some tips on how to teach your children tolerance.

Give a personal example.

Our children’s actions and words are often a direct reflection of our own.
They watch and remember what we do and copy our behavior. It is important to pay attention to the way you treat your loved ones because you are an example to your children. Show respect for others to teach your children tolerance.

Children often joke about slang names at school. When asked how they’ve learned these words, they often say that they’ve heard them at home. When talking to your partner, keep in mind that your child may be listening. Think carefully about the words you use. Avoid using any offending language. Even if you are angry, joking, or not meaning the words you say at this exact moment, your child will remember your words and use them at some point. Don’t forget that children listen and learn from us.

When your child has questions for you, answer them honestly and respectfully.

Everyone notices the differences in people, so it is perfectly normal to discuss them with your children. When they are young, children make friends easily, without any prejudice. Encourage your child’s friendship with other kids from different ethnicity, culture, social status, or performance. You can also choose programs, movies, or games in which the characters are from minority groups or have challenges integrating into society.

Expect your children to treat others with respect.

When modeling their tolerance, you certainly should not accept disrespectful behavior on their part, both at home and outdoors.

Evaluate the differences in your own family.

Accept the qualities of each family member, regardless of differences in interests and abilities. Help your children feel valued for who they are.

Encourage your child’s self-esteem.

We all know that people who do not respect others rarely feel happy and confident. Confident children are more likely to be polite to others.

Involve your children in a variety of activities such as sports, school, daycare, and camps. Group activities and games teach children resourcefulness.

The cultural and religious traditions of the country, the region, as well as family traditions, are important and a cause for pride. We must value and respect our traditions and pass this on to children.

Study other cultures and traditions together.

See how people from different cultures celebrate their biggest holidays.

We should all teach our children to be tolerant through personal example, conversation, or communication with others.
